Fine Motor Skills

Fine motor skills usually refer to the small muscle movements of the hands, fingers, and wrist. Coordination of these muscles is required to complete various daily life activities or tasks. Fine motor muscles typically coordinate with the eyes. These small muscles are stabilized by our larger muscles from our shoulders and trunk. It is vital to strengthen and stabilize the larger muscles in order to develop the smaller muscle of the wrists, hands, and fingers.

The following are examples of fine motor skills:
  • Grasp patterns- on small objects, writing utensils, scissors, and eating utensils
  • Handwriting- print and cursive
  • Shape, letter, and number identification
  • Scissor skills- cutting out shapes
  • Visual perception
